Final Reflection (ENT3003 Assignment 30A)

  1. What sticks out to you as the most formative experience? The experience that you'll remember years later? What was your most joyous experience? What experience are you most proud of yourself for accomplishing? The best experience I've had was surprisingly the videos that I had to record for the elevator pitches. While they were also my least favorite throughout the semester due to me being uncomfortable with recording them at the time, I noticed myself being much more comfortable with them. That is something to be joyful about and also serve as a reminder that repetition and criticism will only help you along the way.
  2. Do you see yourself as an entrepreneur? Do you think you have moved closer to developing an entrepreneurial mindset? I wouldn't say that I see myself as an entrepreneur just yet. However, I am much more further along than I was in the beginning of this course. I can confidently say I am closer to developing an entrepreneurial mindset.
  3. What is the one recommendation you would make to the students who are going to journey down this path in the future? What would you recommend they do to perform best in this course? What would you recommend they do to foster that mindset? My recommendation to prospective students will be to just be open to getting out of your comfort zone and receiving criticism. As long as you are able to apply it to your ideas and adapt it into a better one because of it, then you are on your way to becoming an entrepreneur yourself.

Opportunity:
  • Who has the need? Student-athletes, mostly in the collegiate level have this need.
  • What is the nature of the need? Nature is very important as student-athletes often find themselves misrepresented, or even not represented at all, and suffer legally and financially because of it.
  • What are the forces/changes in the environment creating this opportunity? The NCAA being forced to implement the Pay For Play Act to finally give student-athletes the opportunity to market themselves and reap the rewards.
  • How is this market defined geographically and demographically? This market is far-reaching across the nation geographically to athletes who are in college.
  • How are customers currently satisfying the need? And how loyal are they to whatever they use now? Customers are currently going through illegal measures to profit from their likeness, and are often caught and put their eligibility to play in jeopardy. They are not loyal to whatever method they currently use, as it is currently illegal and just a way to get as much as they can before getting caught.
  • How big is this opportunity? This opportunity is huge and potentially very lucrative, as the NCAA generates around a billion dollars per year.
  • How long will the "window of opportunity" be open? This window of opportunity will not be open for very long and will surely be filled soon after the act is passed allowing for student-athletes to publicly and officially seek out representation.
Innovation
My venture is an agency that is solely focused on this market of collegiate student-athletes. While being well versed in the Pay For Play Act, as well as the rules the NCAA are sure to add and enforce to accommodate it, my venture will focus on the best interests of the player. As a student-athlete in college, they need someone who is not only focused on getting them as much money as possible, but to also do it within the structure of who they're playing for so that their eligibility does not come into question. As a result, my agents will receive anywhere from 25 to 35% of the athlete's endorsement contract.

Venture Concept:
  • What are the reasons to think customers would switch to this new product? How hard will it be to get them to switch? This is an agency that is directly tailored to them rather than one that is just focused on getting them paid by any means necessary. If they value their eligibility and the legality of their deals, it should be a seamless switch.
  • Who are the competitors? What are their possible weaknesses or vulnerabilities? The competitors are the agencies who represent more than just those in this new structure at the collegiate level. As a result of this, they may have a hard time knowing the boundaries of what they're able to do for their representative exactly so that it is also in their best interest as far as being available to play.
  • What role does packaging, your price points, distribution, customer support, the customer experience or the business location play (if any) in defining your business concept? The concept of my business is to focus on the customer as a whole, not just the finances they can bring in regardless of if it puts them in jeopardy of playing or whatever. With that being said, customer support plays a vital role in the success of my agency and what makes us stand out.
  • How would you organize a "business" to support the ongoing production of your new product, service, or process? How many employees? What roles are in the venture? My agency will run the same as any other agency, but the focus will only be on college athletes. We will start off with a handful of quality agents, each handling certain regions, and taking on multiple roles. We will surely expand, as we see fit, to accommodate where there will be more help needed.
3 Minor Elements:
  1. Unfair Advantage? My secret sauce is my social capital. With my network built through the military and beyond, I am able to reach and relate to any type of customer there is.
  2. What's next for the venture? The next product I want to develop is an app that will be easily accessible by the customer. This will give them a tool to track the progress of their marketability and give them further reassurance as to how much they're worth and what they're making.
  3. What's next for me? As far as my business, I would like for my agency to at least have served as the model for how agencies within the NCAA should operate, if not also be the leading agency in collegiate sports. As an entrepreneur, however, I envision this opportunity only growing my network even further, creating even more opportunities to break into.
Feedback:
  • Look into how and what other agencies are doing.
  • Figure out who my target audience is directly and how to reach them.
  • How will I cater to the athletes more specifically, through face to face, social media, partner with NCAA, etc.?
How I Will Adapt:
  • I will certainly study how other agencies have performed and focus on emphasizing their positives while also doing something different to offset their weaknesses and incorporate all of that into my agency.
  • My target audience is student-athletes who are in college, which hasn't changed but I will have to be more clear about that since it may still be illegal to target high school athletes at this point in time.
  • I will cater to the athletes in any and every way that I can to help build that personal relationship with them. Face to face is always good as it is getting as personal as you can get, but trying to get too personal can be a bit creepy. Social media is a great way to stay in touch and check in but too much of that and not much else just doesn't make the relationship as personable. Partnering with the NCAA can give the players a level of safety that it is a legit business tailored for them, but being involved too much with the NCAA can also give others caution and make them feel like we're just another puppet of the NCAA. The key is to incorporate a good balance of all of these to give the customer a good feeling of how we're able to communicate in multiple facets. One way that we will cater to them specifically will be through the use of our app that will let them know what they're worth.

Exit Strategy (ENT3003 Assignment 28A)

  1. The exit strategy that I plan to make withe my sports agency venture is to protect it as a family business and pass it down to my children eventually.
  2. I have selected this particular strategy because it makes the most sense in every aspect. If it grows enough in only 5 years to command a high return then the chances are that it still has room to grow so you're not really selling it at its peak anyway. On the other hand, as an entrepreneur, these ventures should only open more doors to expand and get into other businesses so I am not interested in simply focusing on this venture for decades and then retiring. Building it enough to then pass it down to a competent family member to keep it going, while I explore other opportunities and am able to still serve as an advisor for this one seems like the most beneficial and lucrative strategy to follow.
  3. I feel like my exit strategy hasn't and shall not influence the decisions I make in running the business. Regardless of my exit strategy, I will still operate to the best of my ability and utilize my resources as I see fit to give me the best possible return. Having that good balance of knowing when to take risks and when to be safe will make you successful no matter what the long term plan.

Reading Reflection No. 3 (ENT3003 Assignment 27A)

  1. The message that Peter Drucker tries to convey in his book, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, is that the most important way to be a successful entrepreneur is to be customer-focused rather than focused on the product. Identifying the market first and then tailoring the product to fit them is how to succeed.
  2. The book preaches to focus on the customer, which is what we've been learning in this class. We have been taught to identify an opportunity and create our ideal customer for that opportunity before we go on and develop a product that tailors them and fills that want/need.
  3. An exercise for this class, built around the teachings of this book, would actually be very similar to the customer avatar assignment. Focusing on the customer and learning everything there is to know about them is essential to being able to provide them with a product that will benefit them and that they will see equal value in.
  4. Even though we already learned this in class throughout the semester, it is still quite surprising to see other professionals share this approach of being innovative in a product that tailors a specific audience rather than one that can bring in and create its own audience.

Celebrating Failure (ENT3003 Assignment 26A)

  1. Just this semester, I feel like I failed in procuring an internship for the summer. There were plenty of opportunities available to me to network and even though I sent out emails and applied to the few that interested me, I have yet to get an interview or even a simple response. Granted, I am doing the UF in London: Study and Intern program for the Spring 2020 Semester and am also a veteran with over 4 years of work experience in Supply Chain Management, so I'm not desperate for an internship or experience. However, more experience would only help, so I am definitely still on the hunt for a summer internship for when I get back from London.
  2. I have learned that even great profiles and people get overlooked for opportunities all of the time. That is not a reason to doubt yourself or get down, but instead to continue to grind and push yourself to reach that goal. Greatness always gets recognized, we just have to be patient sometimes and wait for our moment.
  3. Failure is definitely hard and makes you look at yourself in a bad way. However, after that initial stage of being down about it, you should be able to reflect and find ways that you could have done differently and then go out and attack the same goal or a different goal in a different angle that you didn't see before. That is how I handle failure, as fuel to power me in a slightly different direction to achieve the same goal or a similar one. I am able to look at failure more as a risk worth taking, because of this class, because it showed me that all successful people are the ones who failed the most at one point in their lives.

What's Next? (ENT3003 Assignment 25A)

Existing Market:
Firstly, what makes the most sense right now in order to grow in my venture is to be patient. I have to do as much research as possible to learn everything there is to know about this new structure that the NCAA will implement. Seeing as how that has yet to be decided upon, the best I can do is be patient and soak up as much experience as I can in what I know will be needed, and to soak up as much knowledge on the additional potential needs, even starting to get the experience in those skills as well to get ahead of everyone else.

Another thing to focus on is finding ways to cater to my potential customers and make them feel as comfortable as possible with having me handle their finances essentially. One way to do this is to start developing that application now that is easily accessible by the customer and shows them how much they're worth. So, upon the new structure being implemented by the NCAA, we will have an easy way to draw the student-athletes in and show them that we are in full support of their individual growth in building their brand.

New Market:
The new market that I have identified is the professional level of sports. I feel like my agency can also cater to professionals because we can provide the necessary focus and tools to specifically cater to them and make them more comfortable to have us as their representatives. I will surely have to learn the difference in the structure they compete in versus the one that the collegiate athletes fall under, but seeing as though it is not as strict on paying players, it should be a seamless learning curve.

What surprised me the most in this approach is that professionals also value tools that can easily explain things to them, such as my app that will show them their worth. While these athletes make millions and have much more room for error, they would still understandably prefer not to learn the hard way and lose out on much more money, especially when this could have been remedied by simple apps that track and forecast their worth. My assumptions and expectations were correct in feeling that my agency can also benefit professional athletes, and on second thought, this new market appears to be as attractive (if not more) than my existing market because of the much more lucrative revenue and seemingly less work to that will be required of me to market these players since they're already established. However, there is the threat of much more competition, so that is something to take into account as well.

Venture's Unfair Advantage (ENT3003 Assignment 23A)

  1. Leadership
    • Value - Businesses thrive on the backs of those who are leaders not followers.
    • Rarity - Not many people have that leadership trait, or better yet, experience.
    • Inimitability - Though one can always build their leadership skills, it is a skill that most who possess it are born with.
    • Non-substitutability - There is no adequate number of followers that can replace a leader.
  2. Experience
    • Value - Having experience is usually one of the most important resources to have.
    • Rarity - Many people have trouble getting into their desired career field because they lack the required experience.
    • Inimitability - Military experience is second to none and not able to be replicated.
    • Non-substitutability - While regular work experience is quite valuable in itself, military experience has another level of distinction attached to it.
  3. Education
    • Value - Education is vital to having a legitimate business as it is much easier when someone has all of the required documentation to support their competency and legality.
    • Rarity - Many agents start off without the proper certification.
    • Inimitability - This resource is much easier to be possessed, though that it is a very time consuming topic.
    • Non-substitutability - There aren't much substitutes for this resource, as specific certifications and degrees are usually required.
  4. Human Capital
    • Value - To have the necessary knowledge and skills in management is invaluable.
    • Rarity - It may not be too rare for those in my age range to have similar wisdom.
    • Inimitability - My perspective is what makes  me unique and that is not replicable.
    • Non-substitutability - As there may be adequate substitutes, my mix of knowledge may be the best suited for this market.
  5. Social Capital
    • Value - Connections are always valuable.
    • Rarity - The diverse and far-reaching network that I have is not usually seen in my age range.
    • Inimitability - My connections are so diverse and versatile that it is nearly impossible to replicate.
    • Non-substitutability - Connections can be substituted of course, but again, mine may be more needed for this market.
  6. Financial Capital
    • Value - Good credit and financial history usually equals success.
    • Rarity - It is extremely difficult to maintain a good credit score and not get into debt.
    • Inimitability - My financial position can be replicated, though it will most likely take a long period of time.
    • Non-substitutability - Substitutes will usually be of less value than where mine is.
  7. Marketability
    • Value - Getting your brand out there is important to the growth of the business.
    • Rarity - Many sports agencies do not market much.
    • Inimitability - My marketing plan is very inimitable, but for some reason there isn't much change in the current marketing plans of agencies to get more exposure.
    • Non-substitutability - There are certainly substitutes to my plan, however, it may not generate as much interest.
  8. Support
    • Value - Having both physical and emotional support is important to how fast your network grows.
    • Rarity - It is not very rare to get support, as long as you have a solid plan and the necessary resources.
    • Inimitability - It is quite easy to imitate the level of support that I have.
    • Non-substitutability - There really is no substitute for support, you ether have it or you don't.
  9. Versatility
    • Value - Being able to handle multiple aspects is very important.
    • Rarity - It is not very rare to find someone who is able to multitask.
    • Inimitability - It is very easy to replicate the skill of doing multiple things at once.
    • Non-substitutability - The alternative is to focus on one thing at a time, and that is not feasible in the fast-paced sports world.
  10. Focus
    • Value - Focusing on the task at hand, as well as the betterment of the player we're representing is essential to getting quality results.
    • Rarity - It is not very rare to do this, yet agencies still have trouble focusing on anyone other than themselves and their agency.
    • Inimitability - It is not very difficult to imitate, yet again, the lack of focus on the player has proven to be an issue often.
    • Non-substitutability - An alternative, and the norm, has usually been beneficial to only the agency, which is unacceptable.
After conducting my VRIN Analysis for my resources, I have concluded that my social capital is the most important of them all. Since I have been in organizations that build relationships for a lifetime with people of many different walks of life, my network is definitely my greatest resource. The fact that it is only growing too, is what will only strengthen that resource further and in turn even lend aid to the growth of the other resources as well.

Elevator Pitch No. 3 (ENT3003 Assignment 22A)

Reflection: What stood out to me was how the feedback pointed out my progress in cleaning up my pitch, as I still felt like I had plenty to work on but also felt like progress was made. My enthusiasm was also a topic of discussion, which is a bit of a surprise, seeing how I have to use more silent enthusiasm than anything as I am at work recording these videos.

Changes: The changes that were made are mostly focused on cleaning up the speech so that it will sound more crisp and confident rather than me jumbling my words and sounding unorganized. Other than that, I tried to cut down on time to get closer to the desired 90 seconds.

Reading Reflection No. 2 (ENT3003 Assignment 21A)

  1. The theme of the book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, by Daniel Kahneman is about being aware of there being two systems in your head that are constantly in a battle over which one will control your actions.
  2. This class has taught me that you can't just have a set plan and expect it to go that way. This book builds on that by giving the pros and cons of both systems and helping us find ways to organically incorporate both when making a decision.
  3. An exercise for this class, built around this book, can be writing down the reaction to a situation using both systems and writing about the strengths and weaknesses of those approaches. Then, try to incorporate both of them before writing about how that combined approach differed from the individual ones.
  4. The biggest surprise to me is that it was said that the second system, which involves being conscious, is one of the most 'recent' additions to our brain and only a few thousand years old.

Create a Customer Avatar (ENT3003 Assignment 18A)

Avatar Description:

  1. What kind of hobbies does your customer have? Since my customer is an athlete, their hobbies include playing sports and working out to always improve and hone their skills. They also enjoy studying game tape and playbooks to assist them as well. Other than hobbies related to their craft, they enjoy playing video games, listening to music, watching television shows and being on social media.
  2. What kind of car do they tend to drive? (What color is it?) Since they are college students with little to no income, and no real need for a car, my customer doesn't have a car; they actually prefer to walk, jog or run to where they need to get to on campus instead anyway, as it is a form of exercise.
  3. What TV shows do they watch? My customer tends to watch lots of superhero shows such as Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning and Batwoman to name a few. They also enjoy shows that are specific to their passion of sports of course, such as Ballers, All-American and Hard Knocks. Other shows they show a strong interest in is Power and Empire.
  4. Do they have children? Since my customer is only just becoming a legal adult, they don't have any kids. The number one priority is focusing on becoming a better athlete first and foremost anyway, so no time to be trying to settle down and start families yet.
  5. Are any of them adopted? There is a very good chance my prototypical customer is adopted, either officially or unofficially, due to their rough upbringing and having to get out of that environment as soon as possible to be able to succeed as an athlete and block out the distractions and drama.
  6. What are their favorite books? My customer isn't much of a reader outside of sports articles, playbooks and required materials for their academic courses.
  7. Who are their favorite politicians? While my customer is still very young, they don't find much interest in politics.
  8. How old are they? (How old do they feel?) My customer is within the ages of 17-23, though they may feel older at times due to the pressure that is upon them to succeed as athletes and get their family out of financial hard times.
Similarities:
  1. What do you have in common with the customer avatar? I have a bunch of things in common with my customer avatar, including: being athletic (to an extent), playing video games, watching television shows (and the show selection), coming from a rough neighborhood, and not being a big fan of both politics and reading books. I also share the same sentiment that it is best to settle down and start a family after you succeed or are at least comfortable in your current position individually.
  2. If you have anything in common with the avatar, do you think that is a coincidence? Why? I don't think these similarities are a coincidence due to the fact of where we were raised. These types of neighborhoods push you to find solace in sports, superheroes, and focusing on being the best version of you that you can be to help be that hero for your family who wasn't able to make it out.

Elevator Pitch No. 2 (ENT3003 Assignment 17A)

Reflection: The important feedback that stood out to me from my first elevator pitch was to get a better angle, lighting, and to talk with more enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is important because if you don't show an interest and a passion for your own product/service, then you can't really expect anyone else to either. It surprised me to see that I was told I talked about other agencies too much, because I don't think I did. The most wrong feedback was that I was asked what I meant when I said "we" in my last video. This is silly because these assignments are clearly hypothetical pitches to promote our brand, so when I say that I am the CEO of SmashBro Sports and then follow that with the word "we," it's quite obvious that I'm referring to my hypothetical sports agency and not the University of Florida or any other unrelated organization/institution.

Changes: Based on this feedback, I changed what I deemed was important and what I agreed with, such as the angle, lighting, enthusiasm and even trying to talk about my company a bit more even though that caused me to run over 90 seconds.

What's Your Secret Sauce? (ENT3003 Assignment 16A)

  1. Five things that make me unique are my:
    • Adaptability - I am able to be put in any type of environment and excel, thanks in big part to my time in the Marine Corps.
    • Ambition - Coming from a tough background and neighborhood, I've only used that to further push myself and never settle for less because I came from less and I know what it looks like.
    • Persistence - I am determined to finish every single I start and/or set my mind to and will not give up easily, if at all.
    • Work Ethic - Usually, I work harder and longer than all of my peers, and even those under me and above me as well.
    • Attention to Detail - I am quite the perfectionist, and will point out flaws that many aren't able to or just don't care to.
  2. Interviews:
    • My key takeaway from this interview is that I am a product of my environment. However, it is my choice on how to use that upbringing and that is what will result in the success/failure of the final product (me).
    • In this interview, I see that my focus and ability to give honest feedback is a strength. Most people don't seem to handle truth very well, but this person is able to take my advice in and apply it to become a better person and make better decisions.
    • This person lists a bunch of different things things that make me stand out from the rest. One of those skills are my impeccable analytical skills.
    • In this interview, this person points out my adaptability and ability to succeed in any setting. As they point out, this is extremely important in the business world, as everything is only becoming more global and diverse.
    • This last interview actually pointed out a weakness of mine that I am still working on in my procrastination. However, they did say that despite that weakness, I am still able work hard and get it done no matter.
  3. The biggest difference I took from this is my open and honest criticism of people and the advice I try to give them. While my intentions are usually never to bash anyone or discourage anyone, I am not one to sugarcoat anything and am usually referred to as an asshole because of it. It is quite a surprise and very refreshing to see that at least some people are able to see through the "tough love" and take it as a positive rather than a negative. Other than that, everything else is on par with how I described myself initially so there is no need to change my list with these further endorsements.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2 (ENT3003 Assignment 15A)

  • The first person I interviewed valued money the most, so the price of the alternative is what matters to them he most when they're deciding. Since they are either not as well off with money or just that strict with the spending of their own than others, they would rather choose an alternative with a decent quality for a cheaper price than the better quality option that's also relatively more expensive. As far as where and how to buy this option, they are aware that it would most likely have to be a business to business deal with their manager's firm or they can simply go directly to an agency if they don't have a well-established manager, or a manager at all for that matter. Since this person values money the most, they determine the purchase to be a good/bad idea based on how much money they get back on their sponsorship deals and such.
  • In the second interview, the quality of the product/service is what is valued the most. They are comfortable paying more money in order to get the best quality possible. As far as where and how to buy this option, they are aware that it would most likely have to be a business to business deal with their manager's firm or they can simply go directly to an agency if they don't have a well-established manager, or a manager at all for that matter. This person will determine how well of a decision they made based on their availability and the brands associated, since they value quality the most. As long as the agent isn't doing anything illegal to jeopardize the player's game status, and as long as the player sees sponsorship deals from well-established companies, then that's all that matters.
  • A combination of both cost and quality are the factors that were equally important to the third person I interviewed. They didn't necessarily need to get the cheapest option or the one with the best quality, but one that met both needs equally is what this person valued the most. As far as where and how to buy this option, they are aware that it would most likely have to be a business to business deal with their manager's firm or they can simply go directly to an agency if they don't have a well-established manager, or a manager at all for that matter. While this person values a combination of factors, their evaluation will depend on how well both of them align with each other. To determine if it was a good/bad decision, this person will not only weigh their revenue from the deals, but also how well they're being represented as far as the reputation of the companies.
In conclusion, I learned a great deal from these interviews. People value mostly money and/or quality above all else, with little to no regard to style as far as sports agents go. As long as the service reels in the most revenue as possible, and generally from companies with good reputations, while also keeping the players on the field instead of sitting out or going through suspension or anything of that nature due to illegal practices, that's what is most important at the end of the day.

Halfway Reflection (ENT3003 Assignment 14A)

Image result for you can do it
  1. A behavior I have used to keep up with the requirements of this course is making sure to manage my time and get the assignments done usually ahead of time. The deadlines for these assignments are unorthodox and can get hectic if not properly paid attention to. On the other hand, they definitely help in getting in a habit to being more proactive.
  2. There are plenty of nights where I just felt like I couldn't focus enough or was too tired to get the assignments done. What pulled me through more than anything else was to not think too much into these assignments; they are quite simple once you have a clear and open mind. I feel like I've built a pretty tenacious attitude that fits this belief. When I feel overwhelmed with other things or too tired to do these assignments, I'll simply set my alarm to wake me up in the morning before it is due and get some sleep. Lately, I have even been waking myself up before the alarm and able to get the assignment done much faster with a clear head.
  3. Three tips I would give prospective students about fostering the skills that support tenacity and developing the tenacious mindset are:
    • Make sure to stay organized and be on top of every single deadline.
    • Work ahead to build that proactive skillset while also alleviating the stress of having to get things done at the last minute.
    • Don't overthink things! Sometimes, you're only required to give intuitive responses, so there is no need to overdo it.

Reading Reflection No. 1 (ENT3003 Assignment 13A)

The Wright Brothers by David McCullough

  1. About the entrepreneurs:
    • What surprised me the most was that while the Wright brothers were making strides and perfecting motorized flight as early as 1903, both the military and the press showed no interest. Due to the recent failure of Professor Langley, everyone was skeptical on the reports of the brothers' success and didn't bother to do their due diligence. It wasn't until two years later in 1905, that they started getting the recognition and credit that they deserved, thanks in part to Amos I. Root publishing their achievements in his Gleanings in Bee Culture periodical.
    • The most admirable trait of the Wright brothers was how they were able to use their own unique personalities to both take on roles as leaders in their own right and work as a team.
    • What I admire least about the Wright brothers is that they didn't seem to be too family-oriented. While they were inseparable, and it looks like they had a good connection with their father and younger sister, there is not much mention of their relationship with their two older siblings or their mother before her passing. Furthermore, neither of them were interested in starting a family of their own.
    • As mentioned earlier, they faced adversity early on before they were officially recognized. Despite this adversity, they did not let it faze them and instead were continuously looking to make improvements and even sell their invention. The Wright brothers each went through some failures as well. Wilbur had to rebuild a Flyer from scratch in France, pretty much by himself, before giving a demonstration of a lifetime with it and closing a deal that was being stalled for about a year. In that same summer of 1908, back in the United States, Orville broke records in front of some prospective military clients before getting into an accident an severely injuring himself while also killing his passenger. With the help of his sister, he took time off to recover and they also went overseas to join Wilbur in his success, before coming back healthy and finally closing the military deal.
  2. The biggest competency that the Wright brothers shared was that they were determined to see their aviation inventions through no matter what. They were only able to fly together once, and it was after they were well established. This was due to a pact that the brothers made to never fly together because if the flight went bad and killed one of them then the other would still be alive to carry on the business plan.
  3. What confused me the most about this reading was the lack of an education by the Wright brothers. Seeing how Milton fits the mold of a consummate father who preaches hard work amongst other things, it was quite odd to discover that he encouraged them to skip school if they favored his library of books at home instead. Even more strange, however, is seeing how well that approach worked out.
  4. If I were able to ask two questions to the Wright brothers, my first will be why they didn't pursue a family? I can understand if they needed to focus on their work while they were still perfecting their craft, but after that I feel like there was more than enough time to refocus their efforts on continuing their legacy through their family and not just their work. My second question would be why they had a joint bank account? I can relate to having an inseparable sibling in which I share interests and career goals with, but that doesn't entail having to share a bank account with him as well.
  5. As I explained earlier, the Wright brothers' idea of hard work is not for the weak-minded; their death pact proves that. I actually feel like I have a similar opinion of working hard and getting things done my any means necessary.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1 (ENT3003 Assignment 12A)

Segment: My segment focuses on college athletes who have experienced their likeness benefitting everyone else but them financially. As I don't know any current student-athletes, however, the three people I interviewed were former athletes.

Interview 1: This person became aware of their need after graduating and getting a full-time job, but then realizing that there was much more work associated with being an athlete at the collegiate level than there is now in their ensuing career field. Understandably, this person felt like it was too late to seek out assistance in this situation since they didn't necessarily become aware of it until after their playing days were over. They still did their due diligence, however, and are now huge supporters of the upcoming change to allow players to be compensated from their likeness; they do wish they were born a few generations later so they could have taken advantage of this new policy though.

Interview 2: This former athlete is actually still a student but decided to end his playing days and focus on maximizing his other areas of interest after he tore his ACL a few years ago. He became aware of his need as soon as his injury diagnosis came in and forced him to make the tough decision of moving on. For a top-tier athlete with professional talent, to see their life change before their eyes due to an injury is traumatic enough, not to mention there really being no insurance policy or any form of income in place to not only reward them for the work they put in but to also assist them in their transition out of that lifestyle. Research was done, as well as talking to family and friends, and so that is what helped him make the decision to move on to bigger and better things with his life.

Interview 3: This person was aware of their need early on, as they were mostly utilizing their talents in order to assist their family through hard times. Coming from a tough neighborhood and economic background, people find it quite difficult to get out of that lifestyle, and either turn to sports or illegal activities such as drugs. This person chose the good route in sports before realizing that at least in college, there were rules in place that stripped that athlete's immediate value as far as making money as soon as possible and getting his family out of that environment. As a result, this person decided to go with the only other option he ever knew will be able to make quick money. They did their best to work around the system and use their likeness to make money in any way possible, all while not getting caught of course. This is a common problem that is exploited by these student-athletes who feel like they have no other choice.

Conclusion: I learned that while student-athletes all come from different walks of life and don't become aware of their roughly similar needs at the same exact point in their lives, they all still have underwhelming solutions in order to find alternatives to fill that need. This upcoming policy change will give the newer generation of athletes a better ground to build from and will ensure that they don't have to resort to desperate measures if they fall on hard times. My agency will only maximize their newfound benefits and savings as a result of now being able to be compensated accordingly for their likeness.

Idea Napkin No. 1 (ENT3003 Assignment 11A)

  1. My name is Jose and I am in my junior year of undergraduate studies, majoring in business administration, with my area of specialization in sport management and a minor in entrepreneurship. I am a former United States Marine who specialized in supply chain management during my four years of active duty service. I aspire to put together all that I have learned, while also constantly taking in new information, and eventually applying that all to the business side of sports. As far as my business concept for the agency goes, it will serve as a starting point that ties in my business skills and experience into the sports world.
  2. I am offering an agency that will not only support collegiate athletes in the upcoming "pay for play" era of collegiate sports, but that will also strive to be the agency that specializes solely on this new structure that will be implemented by the NCAA.
  3. The target audience of my agency will all have one thing in common: making money off of collegiate sports. On one hand, the NCAA will be looking for an agency to sponsor as the model agency that will strictly enforce their strategy to get the most value out of everyone involved. The student-athletes, however, also will be seeking an agency that will get the most out of their newfound value and help them find a way to capitalize that value with sponsorship deals and other allowed opportunities tailored to their respective likenesses.
  4. College sports is and will continue to be a juggernaut in the entertainment industry for years to come. The new structure to pay players can cause a significant decrease in the viewership and interest of these collegiate sports moving forward if it is not executed properly, however. All parties involved share the same sentiment that my agency will in striving to find a happy medium for all and not let any of it affect the play on the field in the process.
  5. My agency will be able to confidently say that we know and only deal with the rights and wrongs of the new structure to be implemented by the NCAA shortly. This sets us apart from other agencies because they already represent professionals with totally different language in their deals. This can become a problem in that other agencies who have been working with mostly professionals will now have to change a ton of their strategy in order to properly represent a student-athlete under the NCAA and not get them into trouble financially by mistakenly treating them as professionals and going against the NCAA's strict terms. In that regard, we have the advantage and luxury to tailor our representation to fit the needs of the NCAA as well as its student-athletes.
At the moment, the first aspect of my business concept doesn't necessarily fit with the others. Despite my military experience and interest for sports, I currently don't have the necessary skills and tools that are needed to become an agent and/or run an agency. While I am confident that those skills will come in due time, this is quite clearly the weakest element of my business opportunity so far this early on.

Elevator Pitch No. 1 (ENT3003 Assignment 10A)

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2 (ENT3003 Assignment 9A)

Who: After conducting my interviews, I concluded that while there are plenty of people who are fans of sports and want to see the conflict resolved, their intended methods don't align with my opportunity due to a lack of vision or even confidence in collegiate sports one way or another.

What: The need usually starts to differ from mine either on how exactly the players should be paid and by who, and the opportunity in how things should be played out to remedy the situation.

Why: I feel like the cause of the need is unanimous both inside and outside the boundary. The ideas on how to accommodate that need, and who should accommodate it, is where the line is drawn.

Interviewer 1: This person loves collegiate sports and also seemed to love my opportunities. They agreed with my views on the subject and my method on how to get involved and help out with my services, especially the agency service.

Interviewer 2: This person also loves college sports but feels like the NCAA giving student-athletes more than their athletic scholarships is not okay. They believe that it would be more beneficial for the NCAA institutions to be required to spend that money earned on better facilities throughout their entire campus instead of on only the athletic department. They feel like instead of players trying to get compensated nowadays, it should go back to how there was a sense of pride and honor in representing your institution as a student in a recreational sport. Even with a presumed talent level that will be much lower, this person feels like that is the kind of student-athletes that will make college football even more entertaining than the players trying to cash in now, especially considering most of them don't have that much talent to get paid anyway. Those with the talent can find other avenues to get paid for their services if they're not as passionate to simply represent their educational institution in a fun and amateur atmosphere.

Interview 3: This person is quite fond of college sports and also agreed with all of my views and even methods for how to deal with it. However, they feel like the NCAA will provide all of said services, so it would not be beneficial to try to compete with them on this opportunity.

Interview 4: This person loves sports in general and agreed with my methods as possible ways to solve the problem. However, they feel like the decimation of the NCAA has been a long time coming and propose an opportunity of their own, which is actually quite interesting. They feel like the NCAA should cut their losses with prospects of that talent level who have no desire to get an education as well as play sports and just focus on those who are passionate in representing their respective institutions as students first, then athletes, under the athletic scholarships that are provided to them. Conversely, those who do strive to get compensated for their athletic abilities and high talent level, and who doesn't prioritize their education nearly as much, can play in semi-professional leagues instead. This opportunity can also benefit the NCAA as the semi-pro leagues will look to partner with them and use their facilities, broadcasting deals, and/or even their logo on their merchandise to increase the viewership and reputation of the league.

Interview 5: This person apparently watches collegiate sports often, though didn't know much about this issue that has been at the main reason of backlash towards the NCAA for quite some time now. They agreed with my views and was specifically interested in the app opportunity.

Inside the Boundary Outside the Boundary

Who:
NCAA and their institutions
Institutions who don't want student athletes being paid even more
College athletes
College athletes who don't care much for education
Collegiate sports fans who still want to see top level athletes compete in college
College sports fans who want to see student-athletes passionate about being both and having fun, not just getting paid
What:

Assist the NCAA and the student-athletes as agents who uphold the new structure
Uphold the current structure and do away with players trying to get more money
Help the student-athletes determine how much they're worth
Take their talents to an association that will better prepare and compensate them for their athletic abilities
Why:

NCAA doesn't want the student-athletes to be viewed as employees and be put on the same tier as the instructors
NCAA wants to keep as much money as they can from the profits that are mostly generated from the players

Solving the Problem (ENT3003 Assignment 8A)

  1. Selected Opportunity:
    • The NCAA and its student-athletes are currently at odds regarding whether the student-athletes should be paid fairly to play for their respective institutions. This has been a longstanding debate and states are now taking action to soon allow these players to rightfully have a stake in the billions of dollars they generate for the NCAA and its institutions. This will force the NCAA to change its current rules and pay structure to include allowing these student-athletes to market off of their respective likenesses. With that being said, there is opportunity in bridging the gap between the two, especially in the early stages, to help either side enforce the new rules to one another.
  2. Service/Product:
    • A potential service can be to create an agency that prioritizes in learning the terminology of these new rules and help enforce them better. As an agency who specializes in enforcing the new rules of the NCAA, we can be hired by the NCAA as one of its trusted agencies who follows their new structure to the tee, while most importantly being the easiest choice for the student-athletes to be their representatives and make sure they're being compensated fairly and legally. As other agencies may have more seniority and/or reputation, we would be sure to express that those other agencies are usually dealing with professional athletes and not collegiate athletes, so they will surely have to change their methods to be able to represent student-athletes and follow the guidelines set by the NCAA.
    • As the NCAA generates billions of dollars annually, it will surely prove to be quite difficult to track which sales were influenced by a specific student-athlete. A potential product to remedy this can be an app that helps each individual player track the sales of their memorabilia and maybe even determine how much they should expect to receive from the NCAA specifically, if the new rules gives them a certain percentage of their jersey sales or whatever the case. While the student-athletes may not be able to negotiate much more with the NCAA and its institutions under the new locked in terms and rates, they will be able to use these numbers to show their value and better negotiate the terms of their endorsement deals.

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1 (ENT3003 Assignment 7A)

Opportunity: Help bridge the gap between the NCAA and student-athletes (and everyone else involved), in regards to the "fair pay for play" debate.

Hypothesis: The NCAA is unable and/or unwilling to allow student-athletes to be properly compensated for playing for its educational institutions because of the student-athletes potentially being negatively viewed as employees rather than students first and foremost.

  • The Who: The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
  • The What: They are unwilling to allow student-athletes to be compensated for playing.
  • The Why: Student-athletes will be viewed more as employees than students.

Interview 1:

  1. Is the NCAA solely responsible for this dilemma and should they be tasked to fix it?
    • Everyone involved is responsible and have to find common ground.
  2. Do all institutions agree with this? Who else does this affect?
    • No, there are bills coming out in specific states to allow their institutions to pay student-athletes. As well as the student-athletes, the NCAA and its institutions that are affected, the fans of collegiate sports are impacted as well.
  3. Why is it important for student-athletes to be viewed as such? What other reasons are there to not allow student-athletes to be paid?
    • Any type of student should not feel like they are on a higher (or even the same) level as their instructors financially; though they should not be ignored for their influence to the profit of the school's athletic departments either. Other reasons may be to keep as much money as they can from the likeness of these student-athletes.

Interview 2:

  1. Is the NCAA solely responsible for this dilemma and should they be tasked to fix it?
    • The media is responsible for the dilemma. In reality, there isn't a problem with the current system.
  2. Do all institutions agree with this? Who else does this affect?
    • There are already bills in process for specific states to pressure the NCAA into changing their pay structure. This affects the NCAA the most, making it harder for them to enforce their rules.
  3. Why is it important for student-athletes to be viewed as such? What other reasons are there to not allow student-athletes to be paid?
    • The purpose of them being students and learning from these professors is to someday get to that level and hopefully even surpass them, not feel like they're already there. Obviously, there is plenty of money involved in sports in general, the more the NCAA can keep to themselves the better for them.
Interview 3:

  1. Is the NCAA solely responsible for this dilemma and should they be tasked to fix it?
    • They are students who get full scholarships to live a better and easier college life than most. If there is a problem to fix, then it should be to not pamper them as much.
  2. Do all institutions agree with this? Who else does this affect?
    • Of course not, most institutions already pay these kids under the table to come play for them anyway. It affects the student-athletes because now they feel entitled to want even more.
  3. Why is it important for student-athletes to be viewed as such? What other reasons are there to not allow student-athletes to be paid?
    • Students should be focused on getting an education above anything else, otherwise there's no point to go to an educational institution, they can go overseas or semi-pro or whatever instead. There's plenty of money in collegiate sports, the NCAA wants as little hands on that pot as possible.
Interview 4:

  1. Is the NCAA solely responsible for this dilemma and should they be tasked to fix it?
    • Yes, the NCAA are the lawmakers of their association and everyone under them has to abide by their rules. They should fix it and pay their players already.
  2. Do all institutions agree with this? Who else does this affect?
    • No, there are some states trying to pass bills and allow their student-athletes to be compensated. This affects fans of states who wouldn't be able to compete because they start paying players for as long as the NCAA holds firm on not paying them.
  3. Why is it important for student-athletes to be viewed as such? What other reasons are there to not allow student-athletes to be paid?
    • That's just an excuse not to pay them for what they bring to the school as athletes. The NCAA is being greedy with the money that these kids are generating for them.
Interview 5:

  1. Is the NCAA solely responsible for this dilemma and should they be tasked to fix it?
    • No, the institutions have enough power to force the NCAA to make some changes. It should not pay the student-athletes directly, but still let them be able to compensate from their likeness.
  2. Do all institutions agree with this? Who else does this affect?
    • Many seem like they don't, but only now are they stepping up and challenging the NCAA about it. This affects the fans who put lots of their money into memorabilia of their favorite player or tickets to watch said player only for a season or two. If there was a better structure in place that benefits the players more, the student-athletes would be more willing to stay all 4 years, benefitting the fans, the NCAA and its institutions even more over a longer period.
  3. Why is it important for student-athletes to be viewed as such? What other reasons are there to not allow student-athletes to be paid?
    • They should be viewed as students first, that's true, but it is still a business at the end of the day; so if they're generating that much money for their institution, they should be able to also be compensated in some way. Again, the NCAA is a business, so they're not going to simply hand out money to the athletes just because it is the right thing to do; there has to be pushback on the rules that are already in place and the NCAA has to have another business plan in place before they decide to revise them.
Summary: Given my interviews, I learned that even though most people have their own opinions on the matter, they still usually come to a similar conclusion. No matter what side they're on, most of the people who I interviewed understand that an impasse in changing the current structure will not be beneficial to anyone sooner or later. Therefore, it is the general consensus that revising the rules to better benefit everyone should be in the best interest of everyone involved.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends (ENT3003 Assignment 6A)

1. Millennials have an average of $28,000 in debt—and the biggest source isn’t student loans                  (Economic Trends)
  • The source of this information was found on the CNBC Make It webpage, in the subsection titled "Become Debt-Free" under the "Money" section.
  • I believe an opportunity exists because this information suggests that debt mostly doesn't come from student loans. Therefore, there can be even more services and resources allocated towards relieving personal loans rather than student loans, which is currently focused on more because it is widely believed that it is the main source of debt in millennials.
  • Millennials with more personal loan debt than student loan debt are the prototypical customers in this situation.
  • The opportunity should be relatively easy to exploit as there is already a model to go off of that helps in how there have been countless resources and services dedicated to eliminating the student debt of individuals.
  • I saw this opportunity because I happen to have some debt in both personal and student loans and see how there is much more assistance provided for student loans. Therefore, I see the opportunity in putting more effort in eliminating personal loan debt over student loan debt.
  • I found this opportunity in the subsection titled "Closing The Gap," under the "Work" section in the CNBC Make It webpage.
  • This opportunity exists because the information suggests that there is an emphasis on student debt in women. In that case, women can be focused on more in dealing with this issue.
  • The customers with the opportunity in this scenario are more than likely to be women who are in student debt.
  • It will continue to be a challenge to exploit this opportunity as everyone has already been made aware of the disparity between male and female pay, and so it has proven to be a long process to correct.
  • Since I have some female siblings and family members who are seemingly more successful and educated than most (if not all) of my male family members, yet are still stuck behind their student loan debt, I am able to see this opportunity.
3. Consumer-Directed Regulatory Changes Trigger Home Care Layoffs, Possible Closures                      (Regulatory Changes)
  • This opportunity was found on the Home Health Care News website in the "Medicaid" subsection under the "Reimbursement" section.
  • Information suggests that there is an existing opportunity as seniors and disabled people will need to seek out someone else to care for them since their own caregivers are being laid off and the agencies are looking to close down due to unfavorable regulatory changes.
  • Seniors and disabled persons with a need for caregivers are the prototypical customers in this situation.
  • There will be some difficulty in exploiting this opportunity under the new regulatory changes; and due to the fact that most of these customers will have likely preferred to stay with the caregiver that they previously chose who was laid off as a result of said changes.
  • While I have senior and/or disabled relatives that have caregivers helping them out on a daily basis, I was able to realize this opportunity.
  • I found this opportunity on the Footwear News website in the "Business" section under the "Legal News" subsection.
  • There is an opportunity that exists as the information suggests student-athletes will be able to be paid for their likeness in the near future in states such as California and New York (with others sure to follow) if these bills get signed.
  • Known and/or savvy student-athletes coming out of high school and attending an institution in these states are considered to be the customers with this opportunity.
  • There will be no difficulty at all in exploiting this opportunity as the top-tier of these student-athletes are shown to boost the viewership and revenue of their respective institutions for the little time that they're there and then are able to sign major endorsement deals as soon as they become professionals. This reputation is largely built before the collegiate level, and is usually not changed much while there.
  • I was able to see this opportunity as I am an avid sports enthusiast with a desire to pursue a career in the business side of sports.

Identifying Local Opportunities (ENT3003 Assignment 5A)

  1. More than 630,000 pounds of trash collected in Alachua County
    • Keep Alachua County Beautiful (KACB), a local non-profit organization, showed the exact numbers of their cleanup efforts in the community from 2018-2019. The annual report detailed a staggering 630,809 pounds of litter and debris collected, with 431,551 pounds of that total amount being recycled. There were more than 5,500 volunteers involved this year, a 20% increase from the year prior.
    • The problem presented in this story is the amount of trash there is to be collected, on Alachua County streets alone. Granted, it is stated that some of that debris came from Hurricane Irma, contributing to such a high number, however, that still doesn't take away from the fact that there is a problem with keeping the streets clean nonetheless.
    • Seeing how the volunteers are acting as the problem-solvers in this situation, cleaning up the streets for community service hours and experience among other things, the people who have the problem is Alachua County as a whole. Everyone from the high ranking officials to the residents of the county must do better to keep their areas clean.
  2. UF resident assistant charged with battery released as 'high-achieving' student leader
    • On August 28th, current UF senior, Ian Milaski, was arrested and accused of trying to sexually harass and assault a female student. Only 9 days later, however, he was released on both battery and false imprisonment charges after a motion to reduce his original bond was granted. Ian will be required to wear an ankle monitor, and can only be in the county unless authorized for "necessary" UF events and court dates.
    • The problem presented in this story is how Ian was released as being described as a "high-achieving student leader" by the judge based off of his status as a senior teaching assistant with over 200 community service hours, as well as being a member of 2 honors societies. Furthermore, unless he gets dismissed from all of his commitments at the university, other than his classes of course, he will surely still have ample opportunities to be on campus and maybe even bump into the victim.
    • Most importantly, the victim has the problem of potentially running into Ian again because of his 'slap on the wrist' and so she wouldn't have peace of mind and will instead be paranoid and unable to focus on her studies and other important things in her life. Despite the release, Ian will also have a problem with how he will be perceived from now on, both personally and professionally. Lastly, other potential rape victims in general will have even more of a problem coming forward after seeing how the verdict played out in this case.
  3. Former Gators football player Neiron Ball dies at 27
    • After being being in a medically induced coma since last September by a brain aneurysm that paralyzed all four of his limbs, Neiron Ball has passed away earlier this week. Ball's complications with brain illness dates back to his time at UF. He had to have surgery and miss the entire football season in 2011 for arteriovenous malformation (AVM).
    • Despite it being obvious that he died from a brain injury, the problem is that the doctors failed to recognize exactly what happened or even the cause of his injuries, forcing them to rule his cause of death as unclear.
    • Neiron's family and friends now have the problem of losing a father/brother/teammate without really even being at peace and understanding the process of the injury. Also, other victims of brain injuries, and their families, still have a problem of seemingly not getting any closer to understanding their own injuries and finding the necessary remedies for them.
  4. UF Preview prices broke state law. How are they fixing it?
    • Preview is a mandatory orientation that UF requires its incoming freshman or transfer students to attend. Despite the state's statutes limiting public universities to not charge more than $35 for orientation fees, the University of Florida has reportedly charged more than that cap for the past decade. After UF opened an internal investigation to resolve this issue back in March, they included a new $35 option for the summer sessions. However, this cheaper option was apparently not brought to the attention to all of the incoming students, as they were unaware of a cheaper option. Additionally, those who did go through the site thoroughly and found the link to the cheaper option, clicked on it only for it to show them a 'Page Not Found' error.
    • The problem is that UF has not been held accountable for overcharging their incoming students in orientation costs. They should be required to reimburse at least the orientation fees for every student they overcharged dating back to the last decade or so.
    • This is a problem for the incoming students and their parents who have to pay more out of their pockets for an orientation fee that should only be $35. Those prices can add up very quickly when you add the lodging and travel fees, not to mention the same price for every family member that wants to attend and rightfully make sure their prospective student is in good hands. This may also be a problem for the university, as I'm sure lawsuits will surely be coming now that it has been made aware that there should have been a cap on those charges.
  5. Blood left at a church crime scene led to arrest of Gainesville man months later, deputies say
    • With drops of his blood being left on the scene, Kyle Blundell was arrested and charged for breaking into The Greater New Hope Baptist Church. The pastor's office door was damaged, along with a broken glass window and an interior door said to be "broken in half." Kyle has previous misdemeanor charges of larceny and damage to property.
    • The problem is that it took months to arrest this man, since the burglary happened back in June. The fact that he was arrested in Gainesville means he wasn't on the run and therefore not pursued well enough. Having someone's blood, and them already being in the system, should have led to an arrest much sooner. Another problem that could have contributed to the arrest was the church failing to have cameras in or around the building.
    • This is a problem for the residents first and foremost, as they witness the slow response time of the authorities even with personal evidence left on the scene. The problem also persists for the authorities as they realize they have to do better in their response times. Furthermore, both the suspect and the victim face problems in this situation, with Blundell facing felony charges and the church seemingly having to improve their security measures to prevent this from happening again.

Forming An Opportunity Belief (ENT3003 Assignment 4A)

There is an unmet need in regards to having more choices of which after-hour club to go to in Gainesville. Most of this city is populated with college students who love to go out and enjoy themselves after a strenuous week of classes. As a result, the bar/club scene is quite lively on a regular basis. With that being said, most, if not all, of these establishments close at 2 AM, leaving these young well-deserving adults wanting more. To get more out of the night life, however, they only have about one option of an after-hour club to go to. Many students try to remedy this issue by throwing house parties, yet they're not usually in ideal living environments to be as consistent as they would like. To better remedy this issue, I am sure there is about a 95% chance that the opportunity exists to get more clubs open after-hours.

  1. Customer 1
    • When you go out, do you usually wish you had more time to party and enjoy yourself?
      • Sometimes, but I take what I can get.
    • When do you usually realize that the night is ending earlier than expected?
      • I usually already know how much time is left before heading out.
    • How long have you realized that there is really only one after-hour club to go to?
      • Not until late sophomore year.
    • How are you addressing this issue?
      • I'm usually ready to go home afterwards anyway.
    • How satisfied are you with that solution?
      • It's not bad, I'm pretty satisfied with the time I get.
    • Reflection: There are people who genuinely like to go home at 2 AM. My opportunity may not appeal to these people much. However, at times when they do want to stay out past 2 AM, another option wouldn't hurt.
  2. Customer 2
    • When you go out, do you usually wish you had more time to party and enjoy yourself?
      • Definitely man, all the time.
    • When do you usually realize that the night is ending earlier than expected?
      • Right when they start kicking us out of the first club.
    • How long have you noticed that there is really only one after-hour club to go to?
      • Ever since I first got here.
    • How are you addressing this issue?
      • I still go to that after-hour club.
    • How satisfied are you with that solution?
      • They play hip hop so that's cool, I like it. Wish I can switch it up sometimes though, that would be nice.
    • Reflection: This is the type of person to target, and I'm sure there are plenty others with similar views. After the first customer, I felt like my opportunity may not be worth it in this area, but I learned there are plenty of others who enjoy staying out past 2 AM and are interested to have options rather than going to the same place every time.
  3. Customer 3
    • When you go out, do you usually wish you had more time to party and enjoy yourself?
      • Yeah, of course.
    • When do you usually realize that the night is ending earlier than expected?
      • After leaving the club around 2 AM.
    • How long have you noticed that there is really only one after-hour club to go to?
      • Since I started going to bars and clubs out here, not too long ago.
    • How are you addressing this issue?
      • I tend to go to house parties more often than not.
    • How satisfied are you with that solution?
      • House parties are chill, though it wouldn't hurt to have more options from time to time.
    • Reflection: Plenty of the customers are still in their early stages of going out and having fun. Therefore, they still prefer the house parties over the bar and club scene for now. However, if there were more options for them to go to, they wouldn't feel as pressured and uncomfortable of going to someone else's house after 2 AM just to "chill" and can expand on their nightlife experience a bit more.
My opportunity of expanding the after-hour nightlife in Gainesville is still very much present. However, it is not as accurate as before, seeing as how there looks to be a higher percentage of people that prefer to either go to a house party or go home after 2 AM in this area. In conclusion, I feel like there is still an opportunity for profit in this market, though not nearly as much as I initially envisioned. It is extremely important for entrepreneurs to assess the market and adapt their opportunities accordingly based off of customer feedback. This will better determine how much should be invested into the venture and, in turn, how much should be expected to come back in as a result.

Entrepreneurship Story (ENT3003 Assignment 3A)

Image result for homeownership

Just recently, my twin brother and I decided to finally buy our first house. However, this is not because we plan to settle down here. We've been living in Gainesville for over 2 years now and have seen the numerous opportunities that are made available to anyone willing to turn a profit. Therefore, after wasting our money on rent while living in apartments, we realized it would be smarter to invest in a house and put our hard-earned money into something that will make us money in return. Not only are we planning on selling the house later on when the market value rises considerably, but we also intend to furnish the master bedroom and start earning back that money now.

I mainly enrolled in ENT 3003 because it is the entry level course to my minor of entrepreneurship. With that being said, I do hope to learn new and exciting ways to expand my thinking and become a successful entrepreneur. Accomplishing such a feat entails not being afraid to fail and actually embracing said failures to learn from them and do better the next time around. Principles of Entrepreneurship will seemingly start to provide me with and/or sharpen the tools that are needed to succeed in this field.

Bug List (ENT3003 Assignment 2A)

1. Professors scheduling for homework to be due during unreasonable dates/hours are annoying.
  • Why this bug exists? Professors seemingly wants to push students into doing assignments ahead of time and breaking the bad habit of procrastinating.
2. There is only one Culver's Fast Food Restaurant in Gainesville.

3. The hours for the lone Culver's in Gainesville are usually from 10AM-11PM.
  • Why this bug exists? While still being relatively new to the area, it may not yet be feasible to be open for longer periods of time.
4. Wawa does not franchise stores, at least in the Gainesville area.
  • Why this bug exists? Wawa is privately owned and supposedly already has three Gainesville locations in development.
5. The three planned Wawa stores in the city of Gainesville still have not began construction.
  • Why this bug exists? There may be financial and/or logistical differences between the city and Wawa or just Wawa and the construction company tasked to build the stores.
6. The parking decal system at the University of Florida prioritizes on-campus students.
  • Why this bug exists? To better assist those who will usually be on campus more than others.
7. Having to wait at least an entire year to resolve the cliffhanger of an interesting show.

8. Military members being paid the bare minimum to stay in peak shape and put their bodies/lives on the line to maintain the independence of their respective countries, while athletes do the same for entertainment purposes and get paid in the top 1 percent of the population.
  • Why this bug exists? Entertainment industries earn more than enough revenue to handsomely reward their stars, as opposed to what's provided to the government for its unsung heroes.
9. Military members (especially after service) are not recognized and/or supported enough, despite the consensus that they are.
  • Why this bug exists? Businesses and services use the "military friendly" tag to get more service, but most may not be financially stable enough to follow through with it; or they simply never planned to and used it primarily as a tactic to get more customers in the door.
10. Cell phones or other technology being used during a meeting, date, social gathering, etc.
  • Why this bug exists? Other than for emergency reasons, people in this day and age have gotten so attached to their phones and the apps in it that it's become necessary (and a bad habit) to check them more frequently than ever before.
11. Being more grumpy than usual when just waking up.
  • Why this bug exists? Sleeping is a form of recovering/relaxing one's mind, body and spirit so when that's interrupted then it takes a bit of time to adjust to being up and active.
12. Getting more hours of sleep than the average person, but being more tired throughout the day as a result.
  • Why this bug exists? Sometimes, sleeping more than what is necessary can be counterproductive and those extra hours of sleep may be draining the energy that was meant for being up and active.
13. When someone reverts to arguing because they are incapable of having a conversation with someone that has a different way of thinking.
  • Why this bug exists? Many people don't like their beliefs to be challenged and see it as being attacked since they aren't prepared or even capable to learn a different perspective while teaching someone theirs.
14. Many car repair shops' labor charges are like three times how much they charged for the part, when labor for most of these repairs take less than an hour.
  • Why this bug exists? Most people who take their cars into shops aren't capable or willing to fix their own vehicles so the shops usually try to capitalize on that and overcharge.
15. Superpowers and magic being teased throughout entertainment outlets but still not being obtainable in reality.
  • Why this bug exists? It is mostly meant for entertainment and for people to take in the values of the characters rather than yearning for their abilities that are science fiction in nature.
16. Meaningful and understandable lyrics are not valued as much in this new era of music, especially in hip-hop and R&B.
  • Why this bug exists? The new generation prefers to listen to better beats over better lyrics.
17. Law enforcement officers not knowing their legal limits and unlawfully detaining and searching civilians without the proper motive.
  • Why this bug exists? Law enforcement is very lenient on their officers, which makes them abuse their power more often with little to no consequences when they get caught on it.
18. Verizon has the best phone and/or cable services but they have a horrible tendency of running up your bill after you're already in contract with them.
  • Why this bug exists? They have the advantage of having arguably the best services there is, so once they get you under contract then they will start raising the prices for your package and/or adding extra fees that you didn't have to pay initially. The only ways to get out of these charges at that point are to take them to court (which is time consuming and wastes more money on legal fees) or to pay to get out of the contract, so that's really a win-win situation for them.
19. Calling to speak to an operator but you have to get through a bunch of automated services first.
  • Why this bug exists? Apparently there aren't enough operators to get to everyone faster and/or companies realize that it's cheaper to employ this method rather than hire more people to man their phones.
20. It still takes hours per session and/or multiple sessions to get a tattoo done.
  • Why this bug exists? New-age technology unfortunately hasn't focused on this area much yet to develop a better method than the tattoo gun.
At first, it was a challenge to reflect on things that "bug" me and write about them, but after the first five or so, it ultimately got easier to pinpoint certain things and jot them down. I feel like it was a challenge for me personally because I usually don't reflect much on those experiences and instead try to avoid them.
